Barachois House
Mauritius
A reimagined creole house as a tropical minimalist home overlooking a secluded cove.

Cocooned in nature
The vernacular architecture of the Barachois House captures the essence of a traditional island home, for a serene domestic life. Its distinctive character: the single, long 45m block, elevated on a base of black local basalt, topped with a high-pitched hip-roof, is nestled amongst a tropical garden.
The lush grounds are designed in unison with the architecture. The house is anchored by a white coral courtyard leading to formal stone steps, and is cocooned by coconut trees and mangroves to frame the view of the Barachois looking towards the ocean.
The buildings’ profile commands the landscape setting. Wood-louvered screens line the front length to harness the easterly trade winds for natural ventilation. A shaded veranda and pool dominate the west side floating above the landscaped vegetation.
