Sandcastle: Furniture Design
Hospitality experts often ask me to refresh hotel rooms. However, for me, just adding new furniture often doesn’t get to the heart of the design issue. The key to designing a guestroom is to give your guests something more. They want to feel special and be transported to a new environment to share a memorable moment.
It started with a discussion with a local artisan. I wanted to make a line of locally designed furniture and objects from reclaimed sand. LUX* Belle Mare became an opportunity to make this project a reality since its main attraction is the white sand beach. I wanted to blend my passion for nature, Mauritian craft, and modernism, to design different components that would bring the spirit of the beach into the rooms.

It was an intense process of exploratory trials, where we experimented with different mixes and colors. We matched the color of the beach and created multiple textures for the room furniture. Dining tables, bedside tables, and lamps showcase the tactile sand textures, adjusting from smooth to coarse.
The Sand furniture is only one element that makes this room feel special, each piece blending seamlessly into the palette of coral and citrus shades that bring warmth and familiarity. The video tells the story of how the room design finally came together.
